How do you all feel about this blog, that maintains that both college and WNBA PR folks limit their player's time with the media?
I haven't found that myself with the LA Sparks or at the Pac-10 Tournament, but maybe other parts of the country are different. Perhaps other media have had similar experiences they can share?
This is undoubtedly the cause of any distance that may exist:
Too often now media are met with suspicion, when in fact the majority of folks who write about this sport are unabashed cheerleaders for it. That doesn't mean they hide the bad news. But overwhelmingly, they'd rather focus on what's good.
I most definitely sympathize with any paranoia that those in charge of women's basketball programs may feel. The women's game has been mocked and ridiculed for so long. Even today there are bash pieces that occasionally pop up, for no particular reason.
Maybe ladyswish would like to begin by writing that cool critical piece.

I agree with the underlying premise: media should get access.
But in contrast to this individual's experience, I have to stick up for the WNBA and women's basketball on this one. At Swish Appeal, we've had the exact opposite experience of this:
"Frankly, doing anything outside of ordinary game coverage is seen as a bother, which is inexplicable considering the lack of coverage this league receives."
I suppose I'd like to know more...what market? what teams? specific circumstance?
The NCAA is a little tighter on both photos and around tournament time... but my point of contention there has more to do with the rigidity of some of their eligibility criteria than general suspicion or unwillingness to provide access...

I think the WNBA does a horrible job at marketing on the national and local level. These teams are struggling to get fans and yet refuse to think outside the box when it comes marketing. Let's just be honest, the WNBA needs to partner more with the LGBTQI community but noooooooo, they are so scared and want to keep pushing the "family" atmosphere. Give that up please.
