Cris Cyborg Santos to fight on Strikeforce card on December 17

Strikeforce is making some more headway in showcasing women’s MMA by scheduling Cris “Cyborg” Santos’s next fight for December 19th. The date is not yet confirmed, but Five Ounces of Pain reports that Cyborg’s husband Evangelista will also be making his 17o lb debut on the same card.

Cris’s opponent won’t be Erin Toughill (who defeated Santos by TKO the last time they fought), since she’s out due to an undisclosed medical situation, so presumably Santos will face the winner of the November 7th Marloes Coenen v. Roxanne Modafferi match in Chicago. Coenen, who is 28, has 16 career wins and Modafferi, age 27, has a six fight winning streak going in a career that boasts 13 wins so far.

I couldn’t find a way to catch the Coenen/Modafferi fight anywhere, guess we’ll have to wait for the news reports.

Strikeforce has been smart so far in recognizing that giving Santos airtime is a moneymaker; the Gina Carano – Cris Santos fight proved that without a doubt. I hope they will broadcast the December 19th fight and give us the chance to show our support again.

The November 7 card is airing on CBS, and rumors are that the Coenan-Modafferi fight will be the "swing bout," which will air just before or just after the main event, based on time considerations. Either way, we'll know who will face Cyborg soon enough.

I am concerned about the six-week turnaround between the two fights for the challenger, though; that doesn't seem fair.

I hadn't considered the six week turnaround between fights. You're right, that's not long to heal from any injuries sustained in this Saturday's bout. I'm curious about Cyborg's shoulder injury, too -- that's why she was pulled from the Nov 7 Strikeforce card. The press hasn't mentioned it recently though.

And I'll be interested to see who will get more media attention for the December event: Cyborg or her husband...

Well, unfortunately we didn't get to see this on CBS but found a great article the week before the fight about why it SHOULD have been on the CBS card here:

Excellent ADCombat article, Ann. I'm irritated that we can't even seem to get bad cell phone You Tube video of the fight, grr.

Also, it looks like the Cyborg fight might not be until January, according to Marloes Coenen's post-fight interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zVos9h_wic
