USAOutdoorTFChampionshipsEDITOR'S NOTE: AnnGaff and LesleyHiggins are writing these previews for the USA Track & Field Championships, taking place this weekend in Eugene, OR, based on their firsthand Track & Field experience. Gaffigan and Higgins competed against each other in college, with Gaffigan representing the Nebraska Huskers and Higgins representing the Colorado Buffs. Both women competed last year in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Olympic Trials. This year, the two are spectators-from-afar of the USATF Championships/World Team Trials; Higgins is out with a broken foot and Gaffigan gave birth to a baby girl in May.

Discus: Final on Thursday, June 25 at 6:45pm

Top 10 entry throws:

Stephanie Brown Trafton 66.21
Aretha Thurmond 65.20
Rebecca Breisch 63.70
Suzy Powell-Roos 62.92
Summer Pierson 61.19
Gia Lewis-Smallwood 60.32
Taiyshawna Battle 59.00
Anastasia Jelmini 57.99
Ashley Muffet 57.20
D'Andra Carter 57.04

My picks:

1. Stephanie Brown Trafton
2. Aretha Thurmond
3. Suzy Powell-Roos

Stephanie Brown Trafton was the 2008 Olympic gold medalist. So far this year she has won the Reebok Grand Prix, the Pacific Champs (personal best - 66.21m) and the Nike Pre Classic. There are no guarantees in our sport, but it's safe to say that Trafton has had a great last 11 months (she was 3rd at the Trials in 2008).

Three-time Olympion Aretha Thurmond (née Hill), was the 2008 Olympic Trials champion and three-time Olympian Suzy Powell-Roos is the American record holder is the event (67.67m - set in 2007).

Rebecca Breisch won the 2005 U.S. Outdoor Championship and was fourth in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, owns a personal best of 67.38m, set in 2007.
