Simpson (Barringer) started her running career in high school when she became a 5-time state champion in track and 3-time state champion in cross country. She set Florida state records in the mile, two-mile, 5000 m, and three-mile. She continued her running career at Colorado where she became a 7 time All-American and a 4 time NCAA champion. She specialized in the steeplechase, but ran the 1500 through the 5k.
At the 2008 Olympic trials, while still at Colorado, she placed 3, sending her to the Olympics. This was the first women's steeplechase in Olympic history. She made it to the finals and set a new American Record (9:22.26) when she placed 9th. In 2009 she set NCAA records in the mile, 3000 m, and 5000m indoors, 1500 m, 3000 m steeplechase and 5000 m outdoors. Later that year, at the World Championships, she bettered her American Record by finishing in 9:12:50.
Despite being able to sign a professional career following her fantastic 2009 season, Simpson (Barringer) decided to forgo the contracts and aim for an NCAA championship in cross country. After collapsing during the XC Championships, she placed 163rd.
After graduating, she signed with New Balance. During the 2011 Indoor Championships, Simpson took first in the mile and 3,000m. She began focusing on the 1500m. At the 2011 World Championships, Simpson won gold in the 1500m.
In 2012, she finished third at the Olympic Trials in the 1500m, earning her a spot on the US team for the London Olympics.
