In 1995 Thurmond took 5th at the USA Junior Games in the discuis throw. She went on to attended the University of Washington on a throwing scholarship. During her sophomore year, she made the US Team. In 1996 she placed 3rd at the Olympic Trials, was ranked #3 in the US (according to Track and Field News), and won Pac-10's. In 1998 she threw 215-3, a new American Collegiate Record, won Pac-10's, placed 2nd at NCAA's, placed 3rd at the USA Outdoor Championships, and was ranked #2 in the US (according to Track and Field News). She gave birth to her son, Devon, in 1997. She came back to win the Pan American Games in 1999. In 2003, she became a USA Champion and took home another Pan American Games gold medal. She was also ranked #8 in the world, #1 in the US, by Track and Field News. In 2004 she won the Olympic Trials, sending her to the Olympic Games. She won another USA Championship in 2006. In 2008 she competed at the Olympic Games, where she placed 10th. In 2009, Thurmond placed 10th at World Outdoors and was ranked #2 in the US. In 2011, she was runner-up at USA Outdoors. She has been known, through the span of her career, to be a consistent athlete.
