Jeter started her running career at California State University where she set a record for the most NCAA medals. She became the University's first U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier. A hamstring injury nearly prevented Jeter from starting her professional career. She healed up and in 2007, won the bronze medal at the World Championships and took first in the 100 m at the 2007 World Athletics Final. Despite being one of the favorites in the 2008 US Trials, Jeter placed sixth in the 200 m meant she had not made the 2008 Summer Olympics team. After a coaching change, Jeter ran a 7.11s in the 60m at the 2009 World Championships (indoor), the fastest by any athlete that year and a new personal best. In the 2009 World Athletics Championships, she placed 3rd in the 100m. Later in 2009, at the IAAF World Athletic Final, Jeter won the 100 m race with a time of 10.67, to become the third fastest woman in history and set a championship record. Her time in this 100m was the fastest in twelve years. A week later at theat the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, she became the second fastest woman winning in 10.64s. At the 2011 World Championship, Jeter took home gold in the 100m with a time of 10.90.
