Kipyego is a professional runner for the Oregon Track Club.

Kipyego went to Texas Tech University where she became the first Kenyan woman to win an NCAA cross country title. During her collegiate career, she won more individual NCAA championships in 2 years than any other runner in NCAA history. She won the Honda Sports Award three times during her time at Texas Tech. By 2009, she tied Suzy Favor Hamilton for winning the most NCAA individual titles in history.
