Preparation for a triathlon: My style
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 22, 2010 at 3:01pm
The official list making has begun.
Saturday’s Welland Triathlon is approaching quickly and in order to make sure I have everything needed to get me through the day, I need a list. This includes typical items that all triathletes need, like my running ...more

Embracing the walk on a long run
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 21, 2010 at 1:35pm
My legs just stopped turning over at a pace which could be labeled a run. It was the 10th mile of the weekend long run and the late-morning summer sun had come out, all bright and hot with just the wrong tinge of humidity to the air. The road curved up in...more

An ode to a traveling locker room
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 19, 2010 at 9:17pm
This is how a recent conversation went with Mark:
Mark: Remember how wet the field was when I played soccer on Sunday? Well, I forgot to take my spikes out of the truck and they baked in the sun on those really warm days.
Me: That doesn’t sound good.

Dear bathroom scale: Bring it.
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 16, 2010 at 6:30pm
It sat on the floor, covered with hair ties and dust. My nemesis — the bathroom scale.
I cleaned off the clutter and moved it to its proper position, took off my pyjamas (because you never know how much extra weight the pjs will add) and step on the sc...more

Lessons from a brick workout
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 14, 2010 at 12:26pm
Sunday was “big brick day” — a three hour bike ride followed by a 15K run. Both were “as you like” events, meaning I could pick any course and do any pace. I choose hills and for both, I chose slow. Or I should say, slow chose me.
But there are...more

The last day of swim practice
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 10, 2010 at 2:10pm
He looked over at me, gently shook his head and shrugged his shoulders.
Swim Master Greg and nothing left to say.
It’s not that he gives up, it’s just that he doesn’t understand why I’m not moving faster through the water.
This, believe it or n...more

Wet and dirty cycling
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 7, 2010 at 3:13pm
Where is the line between insanity and toughness?
We had waited most of the morning before heading out to our workouts in the hopes that the weather conditions would improve. The internet weather site, after all, seemed to indicate it would be fine by 10...more

What’s wrong with this picture?
by Endurance Meg posted June 4, 2010 at 7:14pm
My guess is the driver didn’t have a case of the Taper.
I have been reading a lot of blogs about “my A race is approaching, its time for taper, OMG WTF! ROFLCOPTER!” and I am not sure what the big deal is. I personally like tapering. I put in the t...more

Megan meets New England
by Endurance Meg posted June 4, 2010 at 12:57pm
This morning started early, with an alarm clock buzzing at 4:15am, not that I wasn’t already awake on and off the whole night. Nerves? Probably. Excitement? Most definitely. After trying quietly to eat cereal, with no avail, and then heading back to Hou...more

There is always cake
by Byline to Finish Line posted June 2, 2010 at 10:30pm
There is something about the world of endurance sports that loves to measure things. We love numbers. Love, love, love numbers. We sometimes call them “metrics” and use fancy names for heart rates (are you working in Zone 2 or Zone 3?) along with numb...more

For the love of swimming
by Endurance Meg posted May 27, 2010 at 2:34pm
I knew going into triathlon that, of the three sports, the swim would be my weakest link. And I knew, after training in 2009 for my first Ironman, that I’d have some ground to make up on the bike and run because I wasn’t about to get out of the water ...more

Catastrophic swims
by Byline to Finish Line posted May 20, 2010 at 11:49pm
In all honesty, I was hoping for an easy workout. It was my transition day. Technically, transition day is the last day of vacation, but in my world, it’s the bridge day — the day when I’m home from travels, starting to scroll through the work email...more

In celebration of the slow and ugly
by Byline to Finish Line posted May 11, 2010 at 12:32pm
The run was ugly.
Then again, I knew it would be. I was prepared for it to be slow and clunky and just not all that pretty.
And in some ways, that’s what made it such a great run.
After battling through my last 70.3 on a sprained left foot, my traini...more

Rev3 Knoxville!

I don’t think I could have picked a better race than the Rev3 Knoxville as my first Olympic distance tri. The crowd, the course, the competitors- everything was awesome and unlike any other race I’ve done.

The gift of injury
by Byline to Finish Line posted May 6, 2010 at 3:28pm
It was a good news/bad news type of meeting.
While my foot has slowly been getting better, part of me wanted to make sure that there was no significant damage. I wanted that reassurance that indeed the issue involved some ligaments or muscles and nothing...more

Learning to heal
by Byline to Finish Line posted May 3, 2010 at 12:07pm
Big sigh.
That’s the attitude today brings as thunderstorms pass through Western New York, my body starts to adjust to the whirlwind of travel and time change and my entire being wants to return to training.
Only I can’t just yet.
See, that unlucky...more

A change of pace
by Endurance Meg posted May 1, 2010 at 1:39pm
In high school, I was a runner, and I was seriously committed to becoming a better athlete with each day of training. I ran what my coach told me to run, I rarely complained, I dug deep and breathed heavy and pushed myself as hard as I could, taking comfo...more

Mind games in the Great State of Texas
by Byline to Finish Line posted April 24, 2010 at 3:17pm
The magazine sat on the pile, waiting for me to read it.
To be fair, my friend Sue had wanted me to read the article on Kara Goucher in Runner’s World magazine back in January when we ran the half marathon in Miami. Only, I was too busy making out with...more

I am a runner … and much more
by Byline to Finish Line posted April 16, 2010 at 9:53am

I can no longer feel my arms
by Byline to Finish Line posted April 13, 2010 at 9:54am
The big red plastic swim paddles were sitting for me at the edge of my lane, just waiting for me to finish my warm up so that I could slip their silicone strap over my wrist and attach them to my wrist.
It had been a while since I was actually able to at...more

Pushing past the puke factor
by Byline to Finish Line posted April 7, 2010 at 12:56pm

Training day failures … or not
by Byline to Finish Line posted April 5, 2010 at 12:33am
In all honesty, I had no idea what to expect.
In preparing for my next 70.3 in Texas later this month, Saturday was my first big brick workout of the season. On the schedule — a two-hour bike ride followed immediately by an 8-10 mile run. The course an...more
