Strikeforce and BodogFIGHT veteran Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm will next compete at Iron Man Championship 10 on July 21st in Salinópolis, Pará, Brazil. She will face Muay Thai champion Valentina Shevchenko, who has competed just twice in MMA and last fought in late September.
Damm has drawn criticism for frequently facing inexperienced opponents in her bouts in Brazil, and the matchup with Shevchenko marks Damm’s sixth straight fight in the country against an opponent with fewer than three MMA fights. Damm, a 22-fight veteran, ended a three-fight losing streak in May.
Damm (16-6-0) once again brings a tremendous experience advantage into her latest foray in Brazil and will hold a decided edge if she is able to take Shevchenko to the mat. Twelve of Damm’s wins have come by stoppage, with seven ending by way of submission. She struggled in a trio of high-profile bouts in the United States over the course of the past year, but got back on the winning track with a quick win in her return to Brazil on May 27th. The bout with Shevchenko will be her second in a row at home.
Shevchenko (1-1-0), while skilled in Muay Thai, is still new to mixed martial arts competition and she has fought just twice thus far. Most recently, she was stopped by future Strikeforce title challenger Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche on September 30th in Oklahoma. Prior to that, she earned her lone MMA win to date with a first-round armbar, though the victory came over five years earlier in September 2005.
The featured bout between Damm and Shevchenko will be part of Iron Man Championship 10, which takes place on July 21st at the Diwali Beach Club in Salinópolis, Pará, Brazil.
