Bellator standouts Jessica “Jag” Aguilar and Lisa Ellis-Ward will face off in a rematch nearly six years in the making at Bellator Fighting Championships 58 on November 19th in Hollywood, Florida. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney officially confirmed the fight with MMARising.com earlier today.
Aguilar and Ellis-Ward first squared off on February 18, 2006 in Aguilar’s pro debut. Ellis-Ward earned a submission victory with mere seconds remaining in round two. Aguilar has never been finished in 14 bouts since and has won six of her last seven fights. Ellis-Ward is 2-1 inside the Bellator cage.
Aguilar (11-4-0) has developed a significant fan following in the state of Florida, where she trains with the respected American Top Team. She brought a three-fight winning streak into her Bellator debut last year in the promotion’s 115-pound women’s tournament and advanced to the semi-finals before suffering a contentious Split Decision loss to eventual champion Zoila “The Warrior Princess” Gurgel. Aguilar has won both of her fights since, including a decision victory over two-time All-American wrestler Carla Esparza at Bellator 46 in June. After a lingering foot injury forced Aguilar out of a rematch with Gurgel, she will now face another former foe instead.
Ellis-Ward (14-6-0) has battled a who’s who of the lighter weight classes throughout her seven-year pro career and holds a 2006 submission victory over former DEEP Women’s Lightweight Champion and pound-for-pound standout Miku “Supernova” Matsumoto. Ten of Ellis-Ward’s wins have come by tapout and she earned her way to the semi-finals of last year’s Bellator tournament by handing Aisling “Ais The Bash” Daly her first defeat via a dominant Unanimous Decision. Ellis-Ward was then submitted by rival Megumi “Mega Megu” Fujii in the next round and will make her first appearance in the Bellator cage in over a year when she returns to face Aguilar.
Bellator Fighting Championships 58 takes place on November 19th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The bout between Aguilar and Ellis-Ward may air on the televised main card and is expected to be contested at 115 pounds.
