Joining a group of elite female athletes from other combat sports who have recently transitioned to mixed martial arts, multi-time world boxing champion Holly “Hottie” Holm is reportedly set to make her pro MMA debut. According to USCombatSports.com, Holm will face Christina “Machine Gun” Domke on March 4th at an undetermined event in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Holm is widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound female boxers in the world and is also a successful kickboxer. Training with Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, Holm is now focused on MMA.
Holm (29-1-3 Boxing) has not lost a boxing match in well over six years. The lone defeat came via cut stoppage in a June 2004 bout with Rita Turrisi. Holm has totalled nine knockout wins during her career and has held a multitude of boxing titles. She most recently stopped Ann Saccurato in December at the same venue – the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque – that her pro MMA debut will reportedly take place. Holm, who has spent most of her boxing career between 138 and 151 pounds, will likely compete at 135 pounds for the reported bout in March, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Domke (5-1-0 pro MMA) has quietly made a name for herself in her native Wisconsin, where she is a perfect 5-0 with all five wins coming by stoppage. Her lone career defeat came one year ago at Raging Wolf 6 in New York when she was quickly submitted by Bethany Marshall. Domke has since bounced back with a pair of submission wins of her own. To date, she has only seen a third round one time in her pro career. Highly regarded for her ground-and-pound, Domke would likely carry an edge in ground skills into a bout with Holm, but would certainly face her toughest test to date on the feet.
While the date and venue are reportedly set for the Holm-Domke matchup, a promotion has yet to be named for the event that would feature the boxing champion’s first foray into mixed martial arts. With Olympic medallists and other female athletes transitioning to MMA, Holm could be the latest on a growing list of fighters to find success in the sport.
