After a series of delays and cancellations, 2004 Olympic Silver Medallist Sara McMann was victorious in her long-awaited pro MMA debut last night at Universal Cage Combat: “Revolution” in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. McMann needed just 40 seconds to submit Christina Marks in the first round.
The freestyle wrestler, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games, was initially set to compete as a professional in MMA last year, but she has endured event cancellations and countless opponents who have backed out of fights. McMann will compete again against Julie Malenfant on June 17th.
McMann (1-0-0) wasted little time in using her standout wrestling abilities to take the fight with Marks (2-4-0) to the mat. She then moved to mount and landed punches that forced Marks to roll and give up her back, which allowed McMann to secure a rear-naked choke for the quick victory.
Winner: Sara McMann by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 0:40 of round one. She improves to 1-0-0.
The impressive win was similar to those of fellow Olympic medallist “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey, who has been equally fast in submitting her MMA opponents to date. While a potential matchup between the two has been talked about by fans, both fighters will compete in separate bouts on June 17th.
McMann faces Canada’s Julie Malenfant at BlackEye Promotions 4 in Fletcher, North Carolina, while Rousey takes on Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet at Hard Knocks Fighting Championship: “School of Hard Knocks 12” in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
