Local educators, health care workers and public safety officials faced off in friendly games of flag football Saturday to benefit those with disabilities.
The Tackling Disabilities El Centro Regional Medical Center Football Challenge fundraiser welcomed scores of people to the Central Union High School football field for the games.
Marty Dineley, executive director of the El Centro Regional Medical Center Foundation, said the event is a great way to benefit those with disabilities in the Valley.
“The El Centro Regional Medical Center is here for the entire community — it’s a community hospital,” she said. “We like to give back to the community in every way we possibly can.”
The $5 entrance fee, as well as proceeds from purchases of event brochures and refreshments, benefited the Imperial Valley Center for Exceptional Children and the El Centro Regional Medical Center Foundation. The proceeds will help purchase special equipment for both organizations.
Men’s and women’s teams representing IVCEC, Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, El Centro Fire Department and El Centro Regional Medical Center played flag football on the field. Members of the community cheered the teams on.
IVCEC behavioral assistant Monica Buford played for the IVCEC Dirty Divas powder puff flag football team. She said the event was enjoyable.
“It’s fun,” she said. “I think it’s a good idea.”
Grace Verduzco of Pioneers Memorial Hospital played for the PMH powder puff team. She said it’s important to raise money through the fundraiser to benefit those with disabilities.
“I’m proud I’m helping children in need,” she said.
