On March 15th at about 8:30 am I received a text message from one of my good friends asking if I’d heard about what happen to Stephanie Brown. Immediately I pictured her face and my heart dropped. I replied “no I didn’t” and waited for a response. I have a blackberry so I can see that my friend is typing the message to me so I stopped everything I was doing to wait for her to finish typing. A few seconds later I received the message. Stephanie had been killed in a car accident earlier that morning. Stephanie was on the police force in San Antonio and while on her way to respond to a call she was hit by a drunk driver driving the wrong way on the freeway.
I literally couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. The first thing I did was Google search the accident but wasn’t able to find anything right off. So I then logged into Facebook and went to her page and there I saw her wall flooded with messages and in that moment I knew this really did happen. I was shocked because this one really hit home with me.
I’d known Stephanie since I was in the 6th grade (at the time, she was in the 7th). My father was a teacher in my school district and she was one of his students. Not only was she a student but she was also an athlete so I ended up meeting her coming to the middle school sports events while watching her and others compete. As I sat and thought more about it, I can honestly say that there is not one negative thing that stood out to me about her. She was an outstanding soccer player at our high school as well as a standout softball player. I can’t get her priceless smile and great personality out of my mind nor could I shake the sound of her contagious laugh. I spoke to my mom about her and we agreed that just about every time she saw Stephanie, she was running somewhere but she was sure to wave and say hello on her way. She was that girl that always had a hug for you; that’s just the way she was. A true breath of fresh air!!! I can go on and on all day about my memories of Stephanie but I’m glad that I have them to cherish her.
Stephanie was laid to rest on Saturday, March 25th and while I couldn’t attend I was able to speak to a friend of mine that was able to attend the funeral. She said it was packed and that it was truly obvious that Stephanie was very loved by many! Stephanie, you will truly be missed and memories of you will forever be engraved in the hearts of the lives you touched…this blog is for YOU!!!
