Women vs. Men

Let's face it--our society for whatever reason often revolves around the misconstrued idea that men are better than women.  As a result of this, women are generally thought to be inferior to men in the work place, in the home, and definitely in sports.  But why?  Women have shown that they can dominate athletics yet still, they are much less followed than men.  In my opinion, the most probable reason for this is that women are never given an opportunity to show what they are capable of.

Just last week I was in Key West, and a friend and I went to see some live theatre performances in the street.  One particular act involved two men who did crazy stunts on ladders, and the ladder on ropes on all four sides that people needed to pull on equally for the ladder to stay in place.  The two men asked for audience members to help them out and hold up the ladder.  But they didn't just call for any audience member--they only allowed men to do it.  I was thinking, What is wrong with you?!? There are plenty of women is this world who are stronger than some men.  Just like I said, women are not given the chance to prove their strength.

I have also been with male friends trying to find soemthing to watch on the television and whenever there is a women's sport on whether it be soccer, basketball, volleyball, whatever, they skip right over but usually not without a "Nobody wants to watch women play sports".  I am sure they say it just to set me off but based on past experiences, I know they aren't joking.

In trying to recruit fellow students to come to big games in high school, the guys would always say something deragotory about female sports.  ALWAYS.  It's like they don't understand the prominence that women hold in the athletic realm.  Women are capable of a great deal more than they are given the chance to prove.

Women have had some incredible feats in the sports world--UCONN's 90 game win streak, Florence Griffith Joyner's incredibly fast world records in the 100m and 200m, Lauren Johson (2007) and Diana Taurasi (2006) scoring 47 points in a single WNBA game.  I mean, come on!  Women definitely have a presence in sports.  Give us a chance men, and we'll show you that we are just as focused, determined, disciplined, and hard working as you are.  We may not have equal strength in terms of muscle but we certainly do not rely on talent to take us places, we really on improving our talent through hard work.

So next time you hear somebody diss women's sports--stand up for yourself women!  Don't let a man tell you that you aren't as good.  Or if a person calls for the help of a strong man, step forward and prove that you are capable of completing the task because the only way our society will let us women become equal is by proving we can do it--and prove it we will!

Kristen - great article. It is true that women just aren't given ample opportunity to show they can be just as capable as men are in sports and general physical activities. We had a huge discussion on this very topic over at Girls Can't WHAT? after I protested that all of the stock images for girls football showed girls "dressed up" as football players and all of the boy photos were action shots. There were literally hundreds of comments debating whether women were as strong as men and if they should compete with men. You might find some of the rebuttal quite interesting.

There is a time and a place for everything. And while it is quite true that some women are stronger than some men, the time and place to prove this is not -- in my opinion -- when the safety of people performing stunts is at issue. I suspect those performers would have preferred the four strongest human beings in the audience, regardless of gender, but considering that a battery of strength tests would likely have been untenable, they went with the odds ... that given the circumstances four men would be the safest choice
