Today Betty Fox, mother of Canadian hero Terry Fox, passed away due to ongoing complications with diabetes.
Mrs. Fox was in her early 70s and is survived by her husband Rolly, 2 sons, 1 daughter and several grandchildren.
Mrs. Fox had her moment in the spotlight during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics when she carried the Olympic flag into the stadium along with other Canadian icons, including famed Senator and peace keeping hero Romeo Dallaire. Mr. and Mrs. Fox later honoured their sons memory by lighting the torch to begin the Paralympic games.
Terry Fox raised $24 million dollars during his marathon of hope before he passed away. The Fox family, largely through Mrs. Fox's efforts have multiplied that initial contribution as the annual Terry Fox Run has contributed over $550 million to cancer research.
According to the Globe and Mail, Mrs. Fox stated in 2000 that "I strongly believe that we all have a guardian angel, and for me Terry is certainly it."
Now all of those whose lives have been impacted by Cancer can have one more guardian looking out for them- Betty Fox.
Let's all work to make the next Terry Fox run the biggest in history to honour Betty, Terry, the Fox family and all those close to us that have been impacted by Cancer.
Rest in Peace, Betty. Canada is proud of the work you have accomplished!
