This coming Sunday, June 26, is the 100th anniversary of Babe Didrikson Zaharias' birth. For those of you that do not know Babe she was a professional golfer that died young in the middle of a very successful professional career. Her accomplishments as a female athlete were unheard of during her time. According to New Books in Sports she single-handedly claim won the team title in the 1932 national women’s track championships. She also won 14 golf tournaments in a row. Perhaps more impressive than her athletic feats was her desire to make a life in sports when it was unheard of for women to do so. She was certainly decades ahead of her time.

For those interested in learning more about Babe there are two great resources available. First, the website New Books in Sport has a lengthy podcast with Don Van Natta Jr., a long-time correspondent with the NY Times and a multiple winner of the Pulitzer Prize about his research about Babe. The podcast is available here. For those that want more than just a coles notes version of her story, check out the new book by Van Natta "Wonder Girl: The Magnificent Sporting Life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias."
