I was just made aware from some British friends of mine that the BBC, who has the rights to the Women's World Cup coverage in England, is not planning on showing the England v. France quarter final game live on their main channel. What are they showing instead? According to this article BBC2 will be showing "a repeat of classic Ronnie Barker comedy Porridge and antiques show Flog It!" BBC1 is dedicated by contract to the Scottish Open (men's tournament of course). The BBC refuses to change the programming on BBC2 due to a long standing policy not to show sports on both if its main channels. Are you telling me that if there was a conflict between the Scottish Open and the Men's World Cup quarter final featuring England, the BBC would not make an exception?

Read more about the lack of coverage of the Women's World Cup quarter final match here. This is absolutely ridiculous and it is no wonder that women's football in the UK continues to lag in popularity when compared to other countries. In Canada, for example, (where our team is actually eliminated from the tournament) we will be able to watch all of the women's world cup play off matches live. I am not positive, but I would bet the same would be true in the United States.

Let's hope the pressure continues to build on the BBC and they change their mind. Women's football deserves better!
