You could imagine my surprise when I checked the Ottawa Sun Sports Page this morning for a recap of Japan's amazing victory yesterday over the United States in the Women's World Cup Final. Finally, I thought to myself, a woman's sports story HAS to be the lead story in the paper. Well, I was let down (again) and then slapped in the face. Not only was the Women's World Cup story relegated to the side bar (see photo above), the lead story was about the Lingerie Football League coming to Ottawa sometime in the NEXT THREE YEARS. Amazing timing to run this story and rain on perhaps the greatest women's sports moment of the year. Would it have been too much to ask for the Ottawa Sun to run a lead story on the Women's World Cup the day after an exciting final game? I guess so.

Ottawa is a City that has had a notoriously hard time supporting professional sports teams. Other then the Ottawa Senators, which has done well, football teams and baseball teams have been driven out of town at a lightning quick pace. Ottawa is also known as a family oriented government town, so it would be interesting to see where the team sponsors would come from. There are also issues surrounding where the team would play. The city is busy trying to get Lansdowne Park redeveloped in time to host the 2015 Women's World Cup and a CFL Football team, so perhaps that would be the likely destination for a future LFL team. However, given the litigation surrounding the Lansdowne Park development, already, it is unlikely that the City will want such a controversial group operating out of the closely watched prime location. Futhermore, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which is running sports out of Lansdowne Park post redevelopment has stated that it has no interest in the franchise.

This blog has been writing about the Lingerie Football League for some time. There is no reason to rehash all the reasons why this is a bad idea here. Check out the previous posts below as well as this post on why this league will not work in Canada.
