Have you ever noticed that when team sports need parents to help with team things like fundraising, working in a concession stand, it is always the same parents?  How do some people have the volunteer spirit alive in their hearts, and other turn the other cheek the second the sign up sheet comes around?

Signing Day 2011

I have always been a parent who signs up, volunteers my time to my kids sports teams.  Why do I do it?  Because, I feel it as a way to support my kids team, support their hard work , get to know other parents, give back to my community, and be more connected to them.   I am only assuming,  ( and we all know that is dangerous to do) why other parents never help.   Most say they are busy, the don’t have time, they don’t know how to do it, they don’t like the other parent helping, you name it I have heard it.  If we were to ask the kids of the non-helper parents how they feel about it, what would they say, and what would the helpers kids say?

Think about how you can help your kids teams.  Most of the time, the coaches are volunteers, they take time away from their families to be with the team, to make them better athletes, and better people.  It is the least we can do  to help pay back for the time they spend with other children.

As National Signing Day comes near, think about those athletes that have made it to the next level, all the hard work and dedication they have put into being the best they can be.   How did you contribute to their success, did you sign the signup sheet to help promote the team?
