I recently learned that January is “learn to ski and snowboard month” (who knew?) Anyway, since my boyfriend is currently learning to snowboard, this really hits home for me, because in taking runs with him I’ve been having to rewind my mind 16 years to go back to the basics. As such, for this week’s shredictionary we’re going back to the basics of all basics to celebrate Learn to Ski and Snowboard month – the Falling Leaf.
If you have ever snowboarded before, you probably know this term quite well. It’s where you haven’t quite learned to turn toe side yet, so you can’t quite carve, but you don’t want to totally board check down the hill either because you’re so over that. So as a result you’re stuck going down the hill as you know best, never leaving your heel side edge – the Falling Leaf. And it’s just like it sounds – you point your nose downhill for a brief moment before coming back into the board check position, then you point your nose downhill for another brief moment, come back into check, and do it all over again until you’ve eventually reached the bottom. Translation? ”I’m still learning to ride, so back out of my way &!%@$!” Noted.
