Eccentric Exercises for plantar fasciitis & patellar tendonitis (runners knee)

A multisport blog by a multitasking mom in graduate school for anthropology and part-time web designer with 2 awesome kids and husband. I've done 2 IMs, 1 ultra (50K), 17 marathons (w/Boston), and too may triathlons to count since 1988. Lately, my fitness challenge is healing two injuries: plantar faciitis (left) and hip bursitis (right). I write about the cultural and physiological aspects of the sports of running and triathlon.

I've found some therapies that have been successful in treating tendonopathy (tendon/facia injuries) that I've researched for my husband's patellor tendonitis and my plantar fascitis nagging injuries. I was thinking that you might find them useful for your own aches and pains so I'm sharing sources about these treatments.

I haven't been doing the eccentric exercises long enough to know if they work yet. I'm adding them to my crowd-sourced-from-Twitter-followers-who-recovered-from-plantar-fasciitis "5 Steps to Heal Plantar Fasciitis that I posted earlier.

The underlying principle of PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy confirms the need for increasing oxygenated blood circulation in the injured fascia/tendons. To achieve this without PRP I'm giving myself deep tissue massage in the affected area about twice a day now. Increasing circulation by rolling my arch on tennis ball was recommended by several of my runners friends, too. After nearly a year of failed conventional and insurance-policy dictated medical treatments and constant heel pain, I'm ready to try almost anything that has worked for other athletes. Here's the information on eccentric exercises, stretches and PRP therapy for tendon/fascia injuries:

  3. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) blood therapy to oxygenate fibers with little blood circulation such as tendons, fascia, ligaments and induce faster tissue repair in some cases:

Please let me know what works for your tendon injury by making a comment or sending me a tweet @multisportmama. Here's to hitting the trails (or roads) again soon!

Cheers,
:) A
