#8 Penn State Defeats #1 Nebraska in Four
Eighth ranked Penn State upset #1 Nebraska at home in four sets Saturday evening (25-17, 25-15, 17-25, 25-17). Penn State was led by Deja McClendon with 18 kills; Gina Mancuso led Nebraska with 14 kills.
Penn State took the lead at the start of the first set, up 6-2 before Nebraska called a timeout. The timeout didn’t slow Penn State, who spread the scoreboard with two more points to 8-2 before Nebraska would score. Penn State continued strong runs, up 17-8 when Nebraska answered with four points of their own. Penn State returned from the next timeout to lead at 20-12 before closing the set 25-17. The second set saw Penn State with the lead again, up 4-1 before Nebraska could tie up the scoreboard. Nebraska would tie up the set four times without taking the lead, only managing to get within one point at 15-14 before Penn State broke away. Nebraska attempted to slow them with a timeout but Penn State went on a seven point run to 22-14 before finishing the set at 25-15.
Nebraska returned from the break fighting, taking the lead at the start of the third set with 5-2 and never allowing Penn State to take it away. A seven point run put Nebraska up 13-5 and the Huskers then spread the gap to a ten point lead with 16-6. Penn State fought back within seven points but was never able to significantly close the gap. Nebraska won their first set of the evening 25-17. The fourth set woke Penn State, who took the lead at the start. Nebraska fought back from behind to within one point at 12-11; however Penn State broadened the gap again to 17-13. Nebraska was unable to get within five points of Penn State's lead as the Nittany Lions closed the fourth set to win the match at 25-17.
Penn State rose to #6 in the NCAA AVCA rankings as of Monday, October 31st, while Nebraska fell to #2.
