Mental Training Days

posted by Running in the Bike Lane Triathlons from a girl's perspective. I love to run and a few years ago I found myself cycling and learning how to swim. Thus, I am now an obsessed triathlete. |

This weekend was tough. We've just completed our build phase 2 and after a nice recovery week, we launched into build phase 3. Oceanside is approaching rapidly and likewise our training is ramping up.
Saturday morning we took off on the Marin Metric Century course, from McGinnis Park in San Rafael. What I'd anticipated to be a beautiful ride in the sun was a windy ride in the gloom of a gray and cool day. And windy doesn't even capture it. I ended up in the very back of the pack, well there were 3 of us together and were are own little group bringing in the rear. The wind was so bad on several descents as I pedaled all out I was barely moving, DOWN HILL.
It was tough to say the least. But upon arriving back to the parking lot our coach commended our toughness and that we had it harder than most of the guys, who had finished nearly an hour ahead of us, as the wind was much much worse on us small little ladies. With some encouragement, I mustered up the will to run after the ride. I bargained and said, go for 20 minutes and then see if you can do 10 more. I made it out for 35 minutes and surprisingly I felt okay on the run, although my body was very very tired.
I was fried after the workout on Saturday and spent the rest of the day horizontal willing my legs to feel better. Sunday I reluctantly got up to do a 14 mile run, feeling slightly improved. The run was tough, it was raining in my face for a while, later the sun would come out briefly. But, I finished it, probably only did about 13 miles, but was able to bring it into zone 3/race pace for the last mile of the run.
Today is a much deserved rest day. You can bet I'm wearing my compression socks!
