Angel McCoughtry and Candace Parker Named WNBA Players of the Week
A pair of former No. 1 overall draft picks and Rookie of the Year award winners - Angel McCoughtry of the Atlanta Dream and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks - were named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, August 15 through Sunday, August 21.
McCoughtry's honor marks the third time this season she's been tapped as Player of the Week. She averaged 23.7 points per game as the Dream went 2-1 on the week. Parker's return from injury left little doubt that she's healthy and hungry to help the Sparks climb into the playoff picture. She averaged 18.5 points per game, including a game-high 23 points last night in Tulsa.
I had a front row seat in her first trip to Oklahoma to face the Shock. Parker's full compliment of skills was on display. She split defenders on drives to the basket, used fancy spin moves and crossovers to shake her opponents and all but took over for her team as she scored 16 in the second half to get the Sparks the win. She's back, folks.
