Who? The Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock.
What? A very good question that UALR's site is not equipped to answer. They do have a mascot, but he appears to be nameless. Trojans! If you are out there, your intrepid blogger begs you for resources.
Where? Little Rock, Arkansas, home of the Clinton presidential library.
When? March 6th, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Why? They won the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
How? The Trojans roared out to a 22-point first-half lead- then gave it all back and more in the second half before claiming a 71-70 overtime win over Middle Tennessee with a Taylor Ford basket with nine seconds left. Taylor Gault had 20 points to lead the Trojans, who also got an authoritative double-double from Marian Kursh (18 points, 16 rebounds).
Surprise? The Sun Belt did not expect UALR to survive the graduation of Chastity Reed, tabbing them to finish third in their division. Instead, they finished on top of the West Division.
RPI (as of 3/5): 111
SOS (as of 3/5): 112
Record: 20-12 (12-4 Sun Belt)
Good wins: At Rice looks like the best out of conference win.
Bad losses: Ruston's not an easy place to go, but Louisiana Tech's not the team they used to be. They're probably gnashing their teeth at the lost chance in the home-and-home with South Dakota State.
Who's running this show? Joe Foley, since 2003. Former head coach at D-II Arkansas Tech.
Extra, Extra! The Democrat-Gazette.
Bruising senior forward Marian Kursh has the name recognition for this team (what I wouldn't give to see her team play Shante Evans and Hofstra!), and she puts up the numbers with 12.3 points on 52.4% shooting and 8.1 rebounds. But freshman guard Taylor Gault, the Sun Belt freshman of the year, is the future of this team, averaging 16.3 points per game. (Senior forward Brittani Williams draws my attention for one of my favorite numbers, a high percentage of offensive rebounds.)
