The franchise point guard is staying in Arizona for years to come, possibly until the day she retires.
Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi has signed a multi-year contract extension to stay with the team. Per a team press release:
Diana Taurasi isn’t just the face of our franchise, she is the face of women’s basketball. She is an example to young athletes everywhere—a fearless competitor, leader, and a consummate teammate with an unmatched drive to be the best. She is everything you would want to build a championship team around and we are thrilled that she will continue her career in a Mercury uniform.
I definitely agree with that sentiment, given her drive to win. She's already one of the best players of all time. Here's where she ranks in the WNBA all time for her career:
Taurasi spent her entire 11-year career with the Mercury, where she won two WNBA titles in 2007 and 2009. She also won the league's MVP award in 2007, earned eight All-WNBA first team selections, and was named to seven All-Star teams, including in 2014, where the game was held in Phoenix.
For some more visual highlights, here's a link to a video from the team which shows Taurasi signing her new contract.
And here's a tweet that the team released as it was happening.
