Yesterday the barrel racing community – particularly our community in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia – lost a great one.

Jack Schweiger passed away after a long battle with cancer Wednesday, March 30, 2011. He was 71.

As a kid, Jack and his daughters Kelley Jones and Sue Bologna welcomed me to their farm to practice barrels, as they did so often for so many. Jack showed up at so many local shows to watch his girls run, and we all know he was a favorite face at the Congress, where he got to see Kelley and Sue claim three Sweepstakes titles on Joe B Jammin.

As an owner, Jack set a standard yet unmatched in our area. He led by example, showing us how barrel racing should be, giving each one of us something to strive towards. Through his support of Kelley and Sue in the arena, and his kindness and generosity out of the arena, Jack touched us all. He was the patriarch of barrel racing in Pennsylvania, the daddy of ‘em all when it came to owners.

Jack was a friend to so many, always full of laughter, jokes, a word of advice, and kindness.

Below, two friends remember Jack, with kind (and honest) words for his family:

“Jack had such a natural way of inviting others into his life and family… My husband and I have the fondest memories of this wonderful man and his hospitality at the PA IBRA finals last year. We will miss you, Jack… Prayers for his wonderful family.” – Linda Tansek

“The world was truly a better place because of Jack. He was a very special person. He always had time for you, no matter how busy he was. He loved his family and was so proud of his girls and “Jammer.” God Bless you Jack – we are all going to miss you!” – Terri Willey
