Thursday, June 27 - In the third and final match of the USASA National Women's Open Cup, the Houston Aces defeated the Kansas City Shock 3-0 in 65 minutes of play, solidifying the Aces as the tournament champions.
Both the match between the Aces and the Shock, as well as the match between Kansas City Dynamos and the Des Moines Menace were cancelled around the 65 minute due to severe lightning in the area.
The Dynamos beat the Menace 3-1 in the shortened match, putting them in second place for the cup.
Before the lighting, Houston scored three goals on the Shock, one off a penalty kick in the second half. Houston maintained possession well in the midfield, setting them up for consistently well-formed attacks, two of which found the back of the net.
Next week, the Shock is on the road as they are set to play the Houston Aces again in an exhibition match, followed by a league game against Fire and Ice FC in Belleville, Illinois.
