KANSAS CITY, MO (October 2, 2013) – For the first time, the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship is coming to Kansas City in November and will be held at the new Swope Soccer Village. The inaugural Big 12 Soccer Championship was held in 1996 in St. Louis then moved to San Antonio for 16-straight years. The Kansas City Sports Commission, Sporting KC and the City of Kansas City, Missouri are thrilled to be hosting the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship.
"We are excited to be hosting the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship at the Swope Soccer Village. This tournament strengthens our long partnership with the Big 12 Conference,” said Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo. “I encourage everyone to attend and enjoy this inaugural event at the Swope Soccer Village in the heart of our City’s largest park."
The Championship will be held November 6, 8 and 10 at the Swope Soccer Village in Swope Park. This is the first year of a two-year agreement for Kansas City as the host city. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 2 starting at 10 a.m. through Big 12 Sports. Day passes cost $9, three-day tournament passes are $14 and 20-ticket group packages are available for $120. For general ticket information or to purchase discounted group tickets call Sporting KC at 888.4KC.GOAL.
“The Big 12 certainly looks forward to playing the 2013 Women’s Soccer Championship in Kansas City,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “Our longtime friends in Kansas City are working diligently to complete an outstanding new facility at Swope Soccer Village, and we are confident that our coaches, athletes and fans will have a great experience there.”
The top eight Big 12 teams will qualify for the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship, which is based on conference results determined by a point system. The winner of the Championship receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s College Cup.
The Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC will be hosting a youth soccer clinic Saturday, November 9, from 9 - 10:45 a.m. at Swope Soccer Village for boys and girls ages 5-10. The clinic will be led by FC Kansas City and the Comets. Individuals can register by going to SportKC.org.
