Barbara Parker was going to make sure she either won the $10,000 Puma contract or the man who did had to put up the fight of his life.
Parker took off at the gun that started the women's field, setting a 4:30 mile pace on the first lap and never letting up until her legs failed her in the final 300m. The men's field starting gun fired 29.43 seconds after the women's and it wasn't until a little over half a lap to go that any of them were able to catch Parker and go for the overall win. Parker finished 6th overall in 4:33.93.
Derek Scott won the fancy champion belt and a one-year $10,000 contract with Puma by running a mile in 4 minutes flat and beating a stellar field of men and women.
This was truly an exciting event that I hope continues to happen year after year as one race. Spectators were allowed to stand in the outside lanes and cheer. We had commentating going on up in the press booth and down on the track from a golf cart. Check out both sets of commentating below to get a feel for the excitement in the stadium tonight!

Ann,
I'm somewhat disappointed in how this race was couched, i.e., giving the girls a 29 sec head start? Doesn't this go totally against what women say they're striving far, equality? Why aren't the women starting with the men? Shouldn't that have been the main thrust of ur article? How can women be taken seriously when given such a handicap? This race only adds fuel to the argument that women can't compete on a fair plain with men...ugh!!!1

Cool Post. I thought the way the race was set up was a great idea. They obviously tried to give everyone what they hoped would be a fair shot at winning the endorsement contract which explains the 29 second starting differential. If they had all started at the same time the women would have been finishing roughly a half minute after the guys and wouldn't have had a shot at the money. Seems pretty straight forward to me.
It also doesn't seem that people aren't taking the women runners less than seriously, it's just a fact that they don't run as fast as they guys. Gaff ran pro track for a while and I'm sure she understands that fact which is why she didn't treat it like it was a big deal in this post.
The video commentary was great, particularly the second one with they guys in the golf car going crazy. Looks and sounds like it was a fun event.
