Lesley Higgins

Today I Skyped with Lesley Higgins, one of the elite entrants in the field for the New Balance Women's Steeplechase at the New Balance Boston Twilight meet on June 5th at Bentley University in Waltham, MA.

Lesley went to the University of Colorado, where she was a 2-time All-American (2nd place in the NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile in 2001 and 8th in the Outdoor 3000m in 2000). When the women's steeplechase was added to the NCAA program in 2001, she begged coach Mark Wetmore to try it. Even though he thought she was too short, he gave in and she ended up becoming the Big XII Champion in 2002 and qualifying for the USA Championships.

Instead of continuing her athlete career post-collegiately, Higgins moved to New York and did "the real-word thing" until 2007, when she decided to make a comeback for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Now she competes for the New York Athletic Club and is coached by Frank "Gags" Gagliano.

Lesley and I talked about just about everything, from Elliot Spitzer's prostitution ring scandal to why you should do two hard workouts in one day. Part II is a continuation of Part I, so watch them one after the other for the full Higgins effect!
