Joel Northrup and Cassy HerkelmanThis week, Iowa high school sophomore Joel Northrup came to the decision to forfeit his state tournament opening-round match against freshman Cassy Herkelman, despite the fact that he was one of the favorites for the title in a state known for its wrestling talent. Why? Because Herkelman is a girl.

"Wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times," said 16-year-old home-schooled sophomore Joel Northrup, in a statement. "As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner.

On today's show, we'll have former collegiate wrestlers, both male and female, as well as a current MMA journalist, to discuss Northrup's decision.

Our guests:

  • Jess Philippus, former high school and collegiate wrestler (Missouri Valley, the 1st ever women's collegiate wrestling team) and current MMA fighter, who recently beat Sarah Goodlaxson for the Blue Corner 105-lb title. Jess has been wrestling since 1997.
  • Lutfi Sariahmed, a contributor to Sherdog.com, one of the top MMA sites.
  • Deryck Ripley, also a former high school and collegiate wrestler (at Missouri Valley, like Jess) and current MMA fighter.
  • Jason High, wrestled on the state championship team at Blue Springs HS in Kansas City and then at the University of Nebraska. He is currently an MMA fighter, and oh yeah, he's my sig-O too.
