Currently, only 7% of the Professional Disc Golf Association members are Female. This is a sad statistic, but something that I have have witnessed for as long as I can remember. Still, while I go and practice my local course, I see ladies playing all the time. I know that women like to play, maybe they don't like tournaments, maybe they can't afford it, or maybe they can't play on the weekends. Whatever it is - I want to increase that number of women out there playing and competining.

In January, I started my position as the Chairperson of the PDGA Women's Committee. This committee orginiated in 2009, but the vision was never followed through. This time around, I was soley focused on creating a strong team to carry out our missions. I collected four women from around the US, along with our strong PDGA Laison to help us work with the PDGA and the PDGA website.

Our first meeting in January was a hit and the ladies are excited to be a part of this revolution. We first started by establishing a list of of Women's Disc Golf supporters around the US and the world. This contact list will help us as the Committee distributes our information to them and then they distribute on the local level.

Our first mission as the PDGA Women's Committee is to globally unite women from around the world, in our "Women's Global Event." On May 12, 2012 women from all around the world will play two rounds of Disc Golf during their local Global Event. The two round scores will be submitted and rated by the PDGA. The two round ratings will be added to determine the player's “Global Score”. For the rounds to qualify the event must include two rounds on the same course/layout and also have five players rated 800+ (male or female) to keep the ratings consistent across the competition. The Global Scores will be updated and ranked throughout the day to find our overall Women’s Global Event Champions. We will be offering all Pro and Am divisions, and you do not have to be a current PDGA member to play. This event has been coordinated to make it as accessible as possible to encourage more women to get out and play!

This event will help us discover how many women there really are out there playing! We can establish a great contact list from all the participants, and stay contacted with our next big idea for the PDGA Women's Committee. For now, we will be focusing on making this event HUGE!
