I'm a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. I'm graduating in May with a BS in Organizational and Public Communication and a minor Recreation Management. I love running most days. Steepling is my forte, or at least I'd like to think so;). My goal is to strive for women's equality in athletics and in life.

I saw the debut of The Mighty Macs, a cinderella story about a women’s basketball team in 1972, right after Title IX and the 5 on 5 rule change. Today was the opening day. I got to the theater early to make sure that I got my ticket. I got to pick my seats amongst the many. I hung out in the bar to pass the time. I walked into the theater. EMPTY.

Willy and I were the only ones in the theater and we remained the only ones throughout the entire film. I couldn’t help but be sad about this. Opening weekend is huge for films. I expected more. It is important, above all else, to go see films about women (and women’s sports) on opening weekend to show your support. Unfortunately, in Mequon, Wisconsin, there wasn’t much of that.

The story was a great one. It reminded me of some of the women I met during the Women Talk Sports panel discussion at the Final Four. The film showed us what these girls were were facing in 1972 as female basketball players at a small, private, all-girls college. Like many films, this was one that brought a tear to my eye and made me totally ecstatic. It was refreshing to see this story told on screen.

I urge you, if you are a supporter of women’s sports, women being portrayed positively in the media, or female coaches/mentors, go to see this movie! Without support of films like this, there will be even LESS to go see in the future.

Cheers to those Mighty Macs.
