A few weeks back I saw this commercial from P&G. I cried. Yesterday (Mother's Day) I thought about it again. I told my mom about how moving it is and that it just pulls at my heart. Later that night the commercial came on her TV. We both cried.
Mothers are so vital to their children's success. Some mothers are more involved in the teaching and development of their child's sporting skills than what is represented on the clip. However, women who are not highly involved in the actual teaching of sport skills also play such an important role in giving opportunities and helping their child in so many other ways.
This clip captures the role mothers play in the development of athletic children. Many times, mothers are not given credit for their child's athletic success. I probably will never make it to the Olympics, but I remember the many times my mother was there when I scored a goal, made a three-pointer, or crossed the finish line. I also remember all the times she couldn't be there because she was working. It never mattered whether she was present or not. She was giving me the opportunity to play. I was the athlete I was, in part, because of her. The clip is a great reminder to thank my mother for packing me lunches so I had energy for practice, for taking me to the store to get running shoes, and for cheering like a crazy woman when she was able to attend my races.
All we need now is a commercial that celebrates the mom's out there that coach and teach their children skills on the field! I bet that would make me cry too.
