STRONG!

New Documentary by Julie Wyman Featuring U.S. Olympic Weightlifter, Cheryl Haworth

Multi-City Tour Through New Crowdsourcing Platform Called Tugg

Cheryl Haworth & Julie Wyman are available for interviews

Cheryl Haworth is a young woman with a big dream: to be the strongest woman in the world. As the 300-pound Superheavyweight U.S. Olympic weightlifter prepares for Beijing 2008, she struggles with injury, confidence, and her place in a world where larger women are not readily accepted. STRONG! tells a story about one young woman's ability to find an exceptional degree of confidence in her own body, and her struggle to hold onto that strength as she faces the end of her athletic career.

STRONG! will be touring major cities throughout the country from July 18th-25th leading up to a national broadcast on Independent Lens on July 26th. STRONG! is using the new crowdsourcing platform, TUGG, to book one night theatrical events in cities like LA, NYC, San Diego and Savannah, with more to come!

Q. What is a crowdsourced screening?

A. Crowdsourcing means YOU control when and where STRONG! will be screened! Tugg will show STRONG! IF and only IF the audience buys tickets in advance. You can set up your own screening or help support one of the screenings listed below.

IMPORTANT INFO:

Synopsis: STRONG! chronicles an athlete’s struggle to defend her champion status as her lifetime weightlifting career inches towards its inevitable end.

Cheryl Haworth defies categories. A 12th generation patriotic American, a visual artist, and, since age 14, America’s top Olympic weightlifter, she is an elite at the international level. A formidable figure in American weightlifting. Haworth is ranked well above all men and women on Team USA. But at 5 foot 8 inches and weighing over 300 pounds, she doesn’t easily fit into standard chairs, clothing sizes, or pre-conceptions. As the 2008 Beijing Olympics approach, Haworth struggles with injuries, the end of her career, and the difficult task of re-defining herself and building a sense of confidence that she can bring with her as she leaves the sport that has given her a sense of pride.

STRONG! explores the contradiction of a body that is at once celebrated within the confines of her sport and shunned by mainstream culture. Through Haworth’s journey of strength, vulnerability, loneliness, and individuation, we learn not only about the sport of lifting weight, but also the state of being weighty: the material, psychological, and social consequences and possibilities of a having a body that doesn’t fit.
