Akron, Ohio – July 25, 2012 – The Akron Racers (11-17) are inviting fans to join them for the Together Against Breast Cancer series this weekend, July 26-29, against the Carolina Diamonds (12-15).
After taking a hard hit last weekend from the USSSA Florida Pride (losing the series 3-1), the Racers are looking to rebound against the Diamonds this weekend.
The Racers offense included strong hitting performances from Nicole Trimboli (.258), Brianna Hesson (.328), and Kaylyn Castillo (.230). Pitcher Lisa Norris (3-6) solidly shut down the Pride’s bats on Sunday to give the Racers a 4-2 extra-inning victory.
In contrast, the Carolina Diamonds won their series 3-1 over the Chicago Bandits last weekend. Leading bats for the Diamonds this season are Rachel Folden (.409), Kelsi Weseman (.349), and GiOnna DiSalvatore (.320).
Promotional nights for the series include:
Thursday is Christmas in July. Fans are encouraged to dress in a fun, Christmas related manner. Fans are also asked to bring new, unwrapped toys to donate to Toys for Tots to help with Christmas gifts for needy children within the local community. Santa “Wheelie” will be distributing to the young fans in attendance various stuffed animals donated by Leona McCabe and the Summit County Softball Hall of Fame.
Friday is WQMX Country Night with morning host Scott Wynn on hand at the top of each inning with a “hot ticket” prize for fans in attendance. Prizes include a Kennywood Family 4Pack, Wildwater Kingdom Family 4Pack, Firestone 9 Foursome w/cart, a pair of Bridgestone Invitational Any-Day Admission Passes, A Dairy Queen Cake and a gift card courtesy of Old Carolina Barbecue! Fans are encouraged to dress in their western best and come to the stadium for some fun and a steppin’ surprise.
Saturday night features a silent auction for various “pink” items including an autographed Racers pink helmet, an autographed DeMarini pink bat, an autographed Carolina Diamonds pink jersey and a special Racers “Together” Breast Cancer Basket. The Racers 2012 pink and black uniform will be worn for the first time this summer on Sunday afternoon at 2:05p. The Racers pink jerseys will be auctioned on their final Pink in the Park Night, Saturday, August 18th.
The Racers first Pink the Park Night! (Sunday, July 29th) will be a part of the day-long festivities that begins with registration for Akron’s first Race for the Cure at 6am. The first-ever Akron Race for the Cure will step off at 8am with a Kids’ Dash around the bases at Firestone Stadium followed by the 5K Race at 8:30am. This is the only Race for the Cure that will start and end at a different location and in this case, two historic sites; Firestone Stadium and Firestone Country Club. Come show your support for those who have been diagnosed or have survived one of the most common cancers among American women today. You can register online at www.komenneohio.org.
