Bronx, New York, February 19, 2013 – Today, athlete, brand ambassador, sports media talent, motivational speaker and business entrepreneur Phaidra Knight launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund her quest to represent the United States in the 2014 Sochi Olympics as a member of the Women’s Bobsled team. Like the non-traditional sports she has embraced throughout her athletic career, Knight, who will be 40-years-old by the time the Russia games commence, is looking at non-conventional ways to help support her dream. Knight says, “Crowd funding has grown in popularity over the past few years and has launched great new innovative products and supported inspiring endeavors. I’d like to think my journey is both: innovative and inspiring.”
For over ten years, Knight traveled the globe as a professional rugby player, establishing herself as one of the premiere players in the sport. She made three appearances in the Rugby World Cup, was selected as a member of the All World Team, and currently holds a world scoring record. She was named as the USA Player of the Decade in 2010. Her achievements were the result of a rare combination of power, strength, quickness and agility.
To fulfill her quest, Knight needs support and donations to help fund her training. She travels to Lake Placid and Park City to train with U.S. Bobsled Team members. In order to spend the necessary time and costly expense to train with the best coaches and trainers, Knight will need to forfeit her job and commit herself 100%. She has set a training budget of $50K.
Like she has done throughout her career, Knight wants to use her position as a world-class athlete to elevate global causes and put her in a position to inspire and positively influence youth. She is rallying positive individuals to support and take part in her journey and will use it to strengthen her commitment to abolishing childhood obesity and related health-wellness issues. In the event that Knight cannot participate on the Olympic Team, remaining funds will be donated to the Women’s Sports Foundation.
