October 17, 2012-When the United States Women's National Team resumes their national victory tour this weekend they will be taking on their strongest foe yet. Germany will be facing off against the reigning gold medal champions on Saturday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.
The match has picked up a TV outlet, as Fox Soccer will be broadcasting the game at 6:30pm EST. The two teams will then move east and play another match on October 23 in East Hartford, CT. That game will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network at 7:30pm EST. NBCSN will be showcasing the national team with a replay of their epic semi-final Olympic match against Canada at 5:30pm EST and then will cap off the night with the gold medal game against Japan at 11pm EST.
Thus far the U.S. WNT has been unbeaten in their fan tribute tour, which has seen them take on Costa Rica and Australia. After their two games against Germany they will meet up with Ireland on November 28 in Portland, OR and then again on December 1 in Phoenix, AZ. The last three games of the tour have yet to be announced.
The last time the U.S. played Germany was in 2010, which featured two games against the European squad. The U.S. women won the Algarve Cup with a 3-2 victory and then the Americans handily bested the Germans on home soil in May of 2010 with a 4-0 win.
However this will be a different German team that takes the pitch this weekend, currently ranked 2nd in the FIFA Women's World rankings behind only the U.S. It is also a national team that can boast two World Cup win's in 2003 and 2007 and was highly favored last summer when the games were played in Germany. They were upset by eventual champions Japan in the quarterfinals.
Since U.S. Soccer has yet to announce the new coach for the U.S. WNT, Jill Ellis will serve as the interim coach for these two matches. [See USWNT: Coaching Search Continues, Future of Pro League] The turnout for these games has also been encouraging with sell-out crowds at every venue thus far. Tickets for both these matches are still available at ussoccer.com.
