WTA: Serena Wins Record 6th Title in Miami

(March 30, 2013)-Maria Sharapova came into the final in Miami looking to break a nine year losing streak to Serena Williams and claim her first Sony Open Tennis title. Williams however had other ideas about the afternoon and won her record 6th Sony Open Tennis championship 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

After taking the first set 6-4 it looked like Sharapova was on her way to securing her second consecutive victory on the WTA tour. Fresh off her win in Indian Wells, Sharapova hadn't even dropped a set as she reached the final for the fifth time in Miami and third year in a row. She even appeared confident facing Williams despite her meager 2-11 record against her.

Williams fought back in the second set to force a third and then reminded Sharapova why she is the number one ranked player in the world by winning the final ten games of the match and claiming her 48th WTA title in the process.

"Maria definitely pushed me, she did a really great job today. I look forward to our next matches, it's going to be really fun for the fans and for us and for everyone" Williams said in an interview with WTA Tennis after the match.  

Williams who makes her home in nearby Palm Beach Gardens clearly had the support of the fans, as she was able to overcome a pretty stagnant first set. With her forehand cooperating in the second set Williams showed why she is so hard to beat when she is healthy.

It was William's second win of the season and first since she recaptured the number one ranking from Victoria Azarenka in February. Sharapova for her part has taken advantage of recent injuries that have plagued Azarenka and currently sits in the number two spot behind Williams.
