(August 9, 2013) It was a cringe worthy moment for fans of the Portland Thorns FC and Alex Morgan fans alike. The playoff bound team endured a major set back in their push for the National Women's Soccer League championship later this month when forward Alex Morgan went down in the 8th minute of their match against the Boston Breaker's on Wednesday night.
It took several minutes for trainers to get Morgan off the pitch and a clearly pained Morgan forced the soccer world to fear the worst as Morgan favored her left knee after colliding with a Breakers defender.
An announcement from the Thorns yesterday stated that Morgan has thankfully escaped serious injury and has a mild medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain in her left knee. Morgan however is expected to miss 2-4 weeks as she rehabs her knee, which places her return to action this season as doubtful.
“It’s a relief that there is no significant damage to my knee. I will do everything in my power between now and Aug. 24 in order to be available for the playoffs and to win the championship,” Morgan said in a statement released through the Portland Thorns FC yesterday.
Morgan will miss a game with big playoff implications this weekend as the Western N.Y. Flash will host the Thorns this Saturday in Rochester, N.Y. The Thorns sit currently in third place in the NWSL standings, four points behind New York who can clinch a home field playoff game with a win against Portland on Saturday.
If Portland can get to the semi-final match on August 24th Morgan will be about two and a half weeks out from the injury. However the championship game is probably a better goal for the national team forward, which is set for August 31st. Of course now the Thorns need to get there without their star player.
