LPGA: Paula Creamer Sinks 75 Foot Putt to Win in Singapore

(March 2, 2014)-It took 80 starts and almost four years but Paula Creamer has finally put an end to her winless drought when she added her 10th LPGA victory in stunning fashion this weekend. Creamer sank a 75-foot eagle putt on the second sudden death playoff hole against Azahara Munoz to win the HSBC Women's Champions.

Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore was the host to the tour this past week and steamy conditions made a lush golf course play hard and fast. Karrie Webb who entered the day with a one shot lead at -11 endured a rough stretch on the back nine which saw her post a final round of 74 and left her one shot out of the playoff.  

Creamer and Munoz both pared the first hole of the playoff and then it was in remarkable fashion that Creamer sealed the victory with the untimely eagle putt. Creamer spoke with LPGA.com after her win about what this victory meant to her.

“It might be one of my favorite wins, and that's going -- taking a pretty big leap right there. But you know, it has, it's been almost three years and you know, so much has happened…It has been coming and it just shows you perseverance.  That's why I love the game.  I work hard for this reason. And holding that trophy, gosh, it was so nice.”

Creamer's last win was at Oakmont when she won the Women's U.S. Open in 2010 and ironically it has been her streaky putting that has cost her more titles since then. However the 27 year-old has been one of the most consistent players on tour and hasn't missed a cut since 2010. She has had three top five finishes in just four events this year and her win in Singapore will surely bump her world ranking back into the top ten. 

For Webb it was an afternoon that probably left the 39 year-old Hall of Fame member wishing she could take back a few swings. Three bogeys in six holes on the back nine led to Webb just missing an opportunity to join the playoff and add her second victory of the year after winning in her home country of Australia just two weeks ago. Webb spoke to the LPGA.com after her disappointing round.

“Just not a lot of good decisions, I mean, bad swing on 15 but -- just bad decisions. I shouldn't have probably hit 3-wood off 16 just because I missed with that club for some reason this week. I've had that club in my bag for ten years and it's going left, so might need to look at a different 3-wood I think. Just shouldn't have hit 3-wood off there but I made a good par.”
