Here at BAWSI we rely heavily on female athletes to understand the importance of using their unique platform for good. But, rarely do we see the coaches of these athletes making the same commitment themselves. The Santa Clara University women’s basketball coaches are an exception. Lead by head coach Jennifer Mountain, the SCU women’s basketball staff has a deep understanding of what it means to give back, and how essential it is to set an example for their student-athletes.

Coach Mountain and her staff have volunteered several times for each of BAWSI’s programs, and when they are able, they attend when their players are volunteering as well to show their support. This type of commitment to their players goes beyond the court and the classroom and moves into developing the athlete as a whole person.

As a former collegiate women’s basketball player myself, I understand the time crunch and stress coaches are under. Even under this tremendous pressure the SCU coaching staff goes beyond their call of duty in order to encourage their athletes to look outside themselves and become more aware of the needs in the community. I only wish that I had that type of encouragement and example set for me as a college athlete, because I know all too well what it feels like to stop playing a sport after a lifelong commitment, and feel lost and unsure of my place in the world.

This type of commitment deserves recognition. So, Coach Jennifer Mountain, Coach Evan Unrau, Coach Marissa White, Coach Stacey Clinesmith, and Director of Operations Amanda Brown, I applaud you for what you do, on and off the court. All of you not only set an exceptional example for your student-athletes but also for coaches around the country.
