Track & Field/Road Racing Roundup: Oregon Twilight, Jamaica Invitational and more!

After such a full week of track and field meets last weekend, many athletes decided to travel internationally this past weekend to compete and othersdecided to race at more local ones.  Check out the wrap-up from this past weekend.

Oregon Twilight-Geena Gall won the 800 meters in 2:05.31 followed by Lauren Johnson in 2:05.42 and Becca Friday in 2:05.61. Sara Vaughn took the win in the 1500 meters in a 4:17.92 followed by Jemma Simpson in 4:18.20.  Julia Lucus continued her comeback winning the 3000 meters in 9:14.44.  Perhaps the most impressive performance of the meet went to Bridget Franek who blew away the field in the 3000 meter steeplechase running a 9:39.77.

Jamaica International Invitational meet- The sprinters were out to get fast times and elevate rivalries.  Jamaica’s Melanie Walker won the 400 meter hurdles in 55.28 followed by U.S. ‘s Tiffany Williams who ran a 55.40.  The U.S’s Carmelita Jeter barely took the win in the 100 meters with a 10.81 ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly Ann Baptiste (10.86) and Jamaica’s Kerron Stewart (10.98).  U.S.’s Brittany Reese took the win in the long jump with a jump of 6.56 meters.  Canada’s Hillary Stillingwerf won the 1500 meters ahead in 4:12.09 ahead of countryman Malinda Elmore who ran a 4:13.18.  The U.S.’s  Michelle Carter won the shot put with a throw of 19.22 meters.  In the women’s 100 meter hurdles, Jamaica’s Brigette Foster-Hilton won in 12.51 ahead of Canada’s Priscilla Lopes-Schliep (12.64) and  Great Britain’s Tiffany Porter (12.65).  Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills beat the U.S.’s Sanya Richards-Ross in the 400 meters.  Williams-Mills running 49.99 to Richard-Ross’s 50.11. In third was Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogo in 50.93.  In the 200 meters, the U.S.’s Bianca Knight took the win in 22.49 over Jamaica’s Shelly Ann Fraser in 22.53 and the U.S.’s Shalondo Solomon in 22.82.

Kawasaki Golden Grand Prix (Japan)- Allyson Felix won the 100 meters in 11.22 over Melissa Breen (11.38) and Chisato Fukushima (11.39). Show Amantoru Monte won the 400 meters in 50.52 followed by Joanne Kadihi in 51.78 and Mary Wineberg in 52.36.

Other performances to note: At  the Occidental Invitational and in the 800 meters, Brenda Martinez took the win in 2:01.63 followed by Alice Schmidt in 2:02.13. Stephanie Brown Trafton set an American record in the discus throwing 67.74 meters at the Maui throw down.
