The 400 meters like all the other events at the Olympics has an incredible field. The favorites are the 2009 World champion Sanya Richards-Ross, and Briton Christine Ohuruogu, the defending Olympic champion and the reigning World champion Botswana Amantle Montsho.

Richards-Ross has been running strong this season. She has two of the four fastest time this season and has only lost once in her last five races. She had a tough U.S. trials schedule running 6 races in eight days. Despite such a tough schedule she was able to run a 49.28 in the 400 meters and she also made the 200 meter team. Montsho is currently ranked fourth fastest in the world having improved her own Botswana national record to 49.54. Montsho has also had a great build-up to the Olympics getting some significant wins including Oslo and Paris. Ohuruogu has only won the Diamond League in London where she clocked a season's best 50.42. The fastest time this season does not belong to any of the favorites but in fact tor Russia’s Antonina Krivoshapka who sped to a 49.16 victory at the Russian Championships.

The final is rounded out with the US’s Francena McCorory and DeeDee Trotter and Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills and Rosemarie Whyte. Williams-Mills has run a 49.78 cannot be discounted as a podium threat.  The race will take place at 4:10 EST and check NBC Olympics for where to watch.
