8:01 PM

All national qualifiers are now posted. Hope anyone that has been following along enjoyed it, and didn't get too confused!

7:43 PM

1 Selection Remaining
At-large pool: BYU-3, Harvard-3, Arizona State-2, Toledo-2, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Boston College-1, Ohio State-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0, Pennsylvania-0, Duquesne-0
--Harvard is blocked by Boston College, and the push cannot be used with only one spot remaining.
**BYU QUALIFIES**

The BYU Cougars are the final team in the field! Hang on for a few more minutes and I will post individual qualifiers as well.

7:40 PM

2 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Cornell-4, BYU-3, Toledo-2, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Arizona State-1, Boston College-1, Ohio State-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0, Pennsylvania-0, Duquesne-0
**CORNELL QUALIFIES** (Arizona State gets a point).

The Big Red of Cornell get in with wins over Indiana, Princeton, Penn State, and Vanderbilt. Only one selection to go!

7:34 PM

4 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Indiana-3, BYU-3, Cornell-3, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Boston College-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0, Pennsylvania-0, Duquesne-0
--Indiana is blocked by Wisconsin, but is under consideration (see below)
--Indiana defeated Cornell and BYU at UW adidas
--Cornell defeated Indiana at Paul Short
--Because the Wisconsin meet is more recent, Indiana is considered to have the head-to-head advantage
**WISCONSIN QUALIFIES**
**INDIANA QUALIFIES** (Columbia, Cornell, and Ohio State get a point)

Another push gets used in this round, as Indiana wins the H2H tiebreak with Cornell and pushes in Big Ten rival Wisconsin. Indiana defeated Penn State, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt.

7:27 PM

6 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Princeton-5, Indiana-3, BYU-2, Cornell-2, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Boston College-1, West Virginia-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0
--Princeton is blocked by West Virginia.
--West Virginia cannot get in on its own.
--Princeton pushes West Virginia
**WEST VIRGINIA QUALIFIES**
**PRINCETON QUALIFIES** (BYU, Cornell, and Harvard get a point)

The Princeton Tigers, on the strength of wins over SMU (2), Villanova, Notre Dame, and Penn State, qualify for nationals and in doing so, push in the team that finished ahead of them at regionals, West Virginia.

6:17 PM (***UPDATE 7:18 PM***)

7 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Penn State-2, BYU-2, Indiana-2, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Boston College-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0
--Indiana is blocked by Wisconsin.
--For now, I am going to leave Indiana out of the mix, as I think Wisconsin has a chance to get in on its own.
--BYU and Penn State did not meet head-to-head.
--BYU holds the common opponents tiebreaker over PSU, having defeated Princeton and Columbia, both of which defeated the Nittany Lions.

**BYU QUALIFIES** (Indiana, Arizona State, Cornell, Boston College, Wisconsin, Harvard, NC State, UC Davis, Florida, Texas A&M and Portland get a point)

I originally assumed Wisconsin could get in on its own, but it cannot. With three selections to go, Penn State is the next qualifier, which puts Princeton on the board. Because Princeton has a large number of at-large points, this would necessitate Indiana pushing in Wisconsin to complete the field. Thus, Indiana should be under consideration at this point in time.

--Indiana is blocked by Wisconsin.
--Wisconsin cannot get in on its won, so Indiana is under consideration.
--Indiana defeated BYU at UW adidas
--Indiana split their meetings with Penn State, winning at Paul Short and losing at Big Tens
--Because Big Tens was more recent, Penn State is considered to hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
**PENN STATE QUALIFIES** (Cornell, Columbia, Indiana, Harvard, West Virginia, Princeton, Boise State, and Mississippi get a point).

5:45 PM

8 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Syracuse-3, Penn State-2, BYU-2, Indiana-2, Texas A&M-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0
**SYRACUSE QUALIFIES**

The Syracuse Orange qualify as the third-place team from the Northeast region. Syracuse had two wins over Notre Dame and one over Vanderbilt to get their points. Boston College is now under consideration.

5:35 PM

9 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Penn State-2, Notre Dame-2, Texas A&M-1, Syracuse-1, BYU-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0, UC Davis-0
--Penn State and Notre Dame did not meet head-to-head
--Notre Dame defeated at least three teams that defeated Penn State; Penn State did not defeat any teams that defeate San Francisco.
**NOTRE DAME QUALIFIES** (Syracuse gets two points. BYU, Princeton, and Indiana get a point)

Once again, we have to go to common opponents to break a tie. And once again, Penn State's poor performance at the Paul Short Invitational hurts them, as many of the teams that defeated PSU at Paul Short lost to Notre Dame at the UW adidas meet. The Fighting Irish's points came from wins over SMU and Vanderbilt. Indiana moves to the at-large pool.

5:23 PM

10 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Washington-5, Penn State-2, Notre Dame-2, Texas A&M-1, Syracuse-1, BYU-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Arizona State-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0
**WASHINGTON QUALIFIES**

The Huskies are no longer blocked and take the next at-large spot. Washington got wins over Stanford, Vanderbilt, Oregon (2), and San Francisco. UC Davis is now under consideration.

5:19 PM

11 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Washington-4, Penn State-2, San Francisco-2, Notre Dame-2, Texas A&M-1, Syracuse-1, BYU-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0
--Washington is blocked by San Francisco.
--San Francisco defeated Notre Dame twice (at Notre Dame, at Wisconsin)
--San Francisco defeated at least six teams that defeated Penn State; Penn State did not defeat any teams that defeated San Francisco.
**SAN FRANCISCO QUALIFIES** (Washington gets a point)

The San Francisco Dons receive the next at-large spot. Washington had the most points among eligible teams but finished behind San Francisco at the West Regional. Notre Dame could not qualify ahead of SF due to two head-to-head losses, and the Dons had a significant advantage in record among common opponents over Penn State. San Francisco's points came from wins over SMU and Vanderbilt. Arizona State moves into the at-large pool.

4:53 PM

12 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Oregon-7, Penn State-2, San Francisco-2, Notre Dame-2, Texas A&M-1, Syracuse-1, BYU-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Wisconsin-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0
**OREGON QUALIFIES** (Washington gets two points).

The #15 Ducks placed third in a tough West region. Their at-large points came from wins over Colorado, Michigan, Stanford (2), William & Mary, SMU, and Villanova. Washington moves to the at-large pool.

4:43 PM

13 Selections Remaining
At-large pool: Michigan State-11, Oregon-7, Penn State-2, San Francisco-2, Notre Dame-2, Texas A&M-1, Syracuse-1, BYU-1, Florida-1, Cornell-1, Alabama-0, NC State-0, Oklahoma State-0, Texas-0, Duke-0, West Virginia-0, Southern Illinois-0, Weber State-0
**MICHIGAN STATE QUALIFIES**

Michigan State was the third-place finisher in the Great Lakes region and came into today ranked #6 in the country. The Spartans had wins over Iowa State (2), New Mexico, Butler, Dartmouth, Michigan, Minnesota (3), and Vanderbilt (2) during the regular season. Wisconsin now moves into the at-large pool.

4:38 PM

OK, we finally have all of the regional results. Very quickly, Iowa State (led by first-place finisher Crystal Nelson) and Minnesota took the auto spots from the Midwest, while Colorado and New Mexico unsurprisingly qualified out of the Mountain region. Sammy Silva of New Mexico was the individual champion there. I'll start posting the at-large process shortly.

3:57 PM

At the West Regional, #1 Arizona took care of business against a deep field, with #18 Stanford emerging as the second automatic qualifier. Boise State's Emma Bates was the individual winner in a time of 19:11. In Madison, WI at the Great Lakes Regiona, Michigan and Butler grabbed the auto bids, with Ohio senior Juli Accurso taking the individual win. We're still waiting on results from the Midwest and Mountain regions, and then the real fun begins!

3:15 PM

As we wait for the final results to trickle in, here's an explanation of what will happen after all the automatic bids are determined:

Once we know all of the automatic qualifiers, we can assign at-large points to the remaining teams. Only 18 teams can be "under consideration" at any time--this is per NCAA rules. So, to start with, only the third- and fourth-place teams from each regional will be under consideration for at-large bids. At this point, the team with the highest point total gets admitted to the field. Then, more at-large points are assigned to the teams that beat the first at-large qualifier, and the next highest-finishing team from that region gets bumped into the at-large pool. This continues until all 13 at-large bids have been determined.

There are some exceptions to this process, but we'll cross that bridge if or when we come to it.

2:48 PM

Five regionals are now posted, with the latest being the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic results. In a pretty significant upset, unranked Villanova wins the Mid-Atlantic over #4 Georgetown, led by seniors Emily Lipari and Nicky Akande, who finished in a virtual tie for first place individually (Lipari was declared the winner). In the Northeast, Dartmouth superstar Abbey D'Agostino led the Big Green to a runner-up finish behind Big East champion Providence. The at-large pool and points are updated through all five regions for which I have results (South, South Central, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast). Four regions to go!

2:19 PM

Presumably, three more meets have been completed, but we only have results from one so far: the Southeast Regional at Earlysville, VA. #11 Virginia and #19 William & Mary took the auto spots, with NC State edging out #28 Duke for the third place. On the individual side, William & Mary sophomore Emily Stites pulled away from a fairly deep field to take the victory.

1:05 PM

Two meets are in the books with competition concluding at the South Central Regional in Waco and the South Regional in Tuscaloosa. Texas senior Marielle Hall won the South Central region by a comfortable 24-second margin over sophomore Dominique Scott of Arkansas. #3 Arkansas easily took the team title with 33 points, and in a bit of a surprise, SMU took the second spot, winning the tiebreaker over #28 Texas A&M. At the South region meet, Florida State star Colleen Quigley was the individual champ, narrowly defeating 2013 IAAF World Championships qualifer Cory McGee of Florida. Quigley's fifth-ranked Seminoles coasted to an easy victory, with the Vanderbilt Commodores nabbing second place.

Above, you'll see the list of automatic qualifying teams as well as the teams currently in the at-large pool. I'll be adding in current at-large points as quickly as I can verify them (at-large points = wins over automatic qualifers during the regular season).

8:11 AM

Good morning! The NCAA cross country qualifying meets are being held today all around the country. This post applies the NCAA qualifying procedures to the actual results of those meets in an attempt to determine which teams and individuals will qualify for the national championship meet on November 23 in Terre Haute, IN.

Please feel free to ask questions or leave comments. The first meets get underway in about four hours (FYI - I'm using EST for the time stamps). Check back often!
