BREAKING NEWS: IOC accepts the inclusion of women's canoe to the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China!! The IOC decided to accept six new events to generate team atmosphere, promote gender equality and balance sprint and endurance events.
These events are as follows:
1. CANOE: Women’s C1 (singles canoe) head-to-head sprint racing and Women’s C1 obstacle slalom racing event
2. Athletics: an 8x100m mixed team relay event
3. Aquatics: 800m freestyle for men and women and a diving team event.
Depending on the sport/discipline they compete in and their gender, athletes participating in the YOG sports competitions must be 15-18 years old on 31 December in the year of the YOG. See the official YOG Fact Sheet http://www.olympic.org/Documents/Reference_documents_Factsheets/The_Youth_Olympic_Games.pdf
WHAT'S NEXT?
a. 2016 Olympics in Rio: the 2016 Olympic program will be finalized in 2013 by the IOC. We continue to work to gain Olympic status for women in canoe for this Games.
b. 2015 Continental Games (on all 5 continents): The Continental Games typically follow the Olympic Program and the schedule is being worked on now. To date only Africa has included women's canoe (the C1 200 meter event) at its Games - the 2011 All-Africa Games. We continue to work with Continential Confederations and host organizations to include women's events to this program. The 2015 Pan American Games are in Toronto, Canada - home of the pioneering efforts to realize gender equality in Olympic-style Canoeing in Canada in 1995 and on the Olympic Program in 1998 as Toronto bid against Bejing for the 2008 Olympics.
