At first glance, Week 2 looked like it was going to be lackluster for college football. No signature games. Nothing to get us excited.

Boy, did that change in a hurry.

There were upsets galore. (Kudos to you if Louisiana-Monroe was on your radar prior to last Saturday.) Shuffling in apparent conference strength. (Who knew the Pac-12 South was any good?) And, unfortunately on a much more sobering note, serious injuries that required ambulances and stadium-wide prayers.

So, here’s a look back on what you need to remember from last weekend … and games you should have your eye on this weekend.

And I think everyone would agree that while we hope for another weekend of rankings chaos and upsets, we hope no one else gets seriously hurt in that process.

Suit-able for Review: Five games worth remembering

5. Virginia’s win over Penn State

Talk about having your hopes ripped out of your chest and stomped on. Penn State played extremely well on the road after suffering a deflating Week 1 loss at home to Ohio. The offense looked good, despite an injury to Matt McGloin. But … the kicking game. Oh, the kicking game. Four missed field goals and a blocked extra point does not often a victor make. A 17-16 loss and a second consecutive week of heartbreak may be too much for the Nittany Lions to overcome this season. And credit definitely goes to Virginia, which hung around and hung around, just long enough to finally steal away the win in the fourth quarter.

4. Florida’s win over Texas A&M and Georgia’s win over Missouri

The two new SEC teams came out with fire, didn’t they? Texas A&M looked unstoppable early; Missouri built an early lead on the arm of quarterback James Franklin. But in the second half of their respective games, it was the SEC long-timers that rallied to big wins. For Florida, it helped ease at least a bit of the tension around its uncertain quarterback situation. For Georgia, it showed that the Bulldogs have the defensive prowess to take control of a game. And for A&M and Missouri? Well, welcome to the SEC. Go get ‘em next week.

3. UCLA’s win over Nebraska, Arizona State’s win over Illinois and Arizona’s win over Oklahoma State

Three Pac-12 South teams. Three new head coaches. And three statement-making wins over significant opponents. It’s hard to say that a Week 2 win is a signature moment in a season, but for Jim Mora, Todd Graham and Rich Rodriguez, respectively, that statement may be true when we look back at 2012. These three teams, which last year were part of a woeful Pac-12 South, are now each 2-0. Confidence is high. Arizona and UCLA both have very winnable games this week, against South Carolina State and Houston, respectively. Arizona State, meanwhile, has a second consecutive chance to grab a big win, this time against Missouri. A ranked Arizona State team? If it beats Mizzou this week, it isn’t out of the question.

2. Oregon State’s win over Wisconsin

On the other side of the equation, the Big Ten had an abysmal week last week. Add this game, one of the biggest shockers in all of college football, to that list. In one week, Wisconsin went from ranked No. 13 in the country with a serious Heisman candidate in running back Montee Ball … to unranked and wondering what happened to its run game. If the Heisman race is close, voters may look back at this game for Ball. His 61-yard performance in Corvallis may have cost him the hardware.

1.  Louisiana-Monroe’s win over Arkansas

Easily the biggest upset of the weekend, this game will likely be remembered for both ULM’s exuberance in victory and the injury suffered by Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson. Wilson was the Razorbacks’ rock. After all the turmoil in the offseason surrounding its former head coach, Wilson was going to lead Arkansas into the sunset. And that fairy tale ended far too abruptly for Arkansas fans. The loss last week – both of the game and of Wilson – made this week’s highly anticipated showdown with No. 1 Alabama trivialized to just another Saturday afternoon SEC game.  If Saturday is ugly, and it very well could be, it may be difficult for Arkansas to recover.  As for ULM? Well, the celebration was spectacular. Including the officer who hugged coach Todd Berry as the game ended. (For more amazing gifs, check this SB Nation post.)

Suit-able for Preview: Ten games worth watching

(All times Eastern)

Rutgers at South Florida, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, ESPN: Who would have thought when the season started that this game would be a matchup between two of the four teams leading the Big East?

California at Ohio State, noon Saturday, ABC: This one could be sneaky good. Ohio State is tough to beat at home and Cal lost in Week 1 to Nevada. Can Cal match Ohio State’s intensity? If it can’t, this could get out of hand very quickly.

Virginia Tech at Pitt, noon Saturday, ESPNU: After pathetic showings in its first two outings, will Pitt show up for this game? If not, Virginia Tech could put this game out of reach well before halftime.

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn, 12:20 p.m. Saturday, SEC/ESPN3: Do the Warhawks have a second week of magic in them? An 0-2 Auburn team would seem to be ripe for the picking, especially if ULM quarterback Kolton Browning has another game like he did against Arkansas. Auburn, meanwhile, is fighting for its life. An 0-3 start isn’t acceptable in Toomer’s Corner.

Alabama at Arkansas, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, CBS: This was a game all the college football analysts had starred and highlighted on their calendars. Until last Saturday, that is. Not only has the game been minimized in hype this week due to Arkansas’ loss, even ESPN College GameDay has passed up the game, opting to head to Tennessee instead.

Florida at Tennessee, 6 p.m. Saturday, ESPN: Speaking of Tennessee, this game suddenly became a matchup between two ranked teams with Florida’s win over A&M last Saturday. Already a highly-contested rivalry game, expect this to be a tight one in Knoxville.

Arizona State at Missouri, 7 p.m. Saturday, ESPN2: Can Arizona State take the next step and knock off its second name-worthy opponent in as many weeks? If it can, expect to see the Sun Devils nationally ranked. Or will Missouri bounce back from its deflating loss to Georgia last week?

USC at Stanford, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, FOX: Last year, these two teams gave us a 56-48 overtime thriller. There’s no Andrew Luck this season, but there is a Matt Barkley. And Gus Johnson will be on the call for the Fox broadcast team.

Notre Dame at Michigan State, 8 p.m. Saturday, ABC: Well, now, this game gets more interesting after Wednesday’s developments, doesn’t it? With Notre Dame announcing it’s heading to the ACC, the Big Ten didn’t exactly cheer for the decision. It was already a Midwest rivalry. Expect it to be an even more hostile crowd in East Lansing on Saturday night.

Texas at Ole Miss, 9:15 p.m. Saturday, ESPN: Ole Miss is 2-0. No, that’s not a misprint. Are the Rebels contenders or pretenders? This game will do a lot to answer that question.
