Washington Wizard Gilbert Arenas goes to court today facing a felony gun possession charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The NBA reports that he may already have a plea deal in place which could spare him jail time.

Arenas kicked off 2010 by irritating NBA Commissioner David Sterns with a humorous approach to his weapons infractions, including a violation of NBA collective bargaining for possessing a gun in the Verizon Center. Suspended indefinitely last week, he has since been very quiet.

The chatter about him has continued, however, even though the self-described goofball shut down his Twitter account. Did you hear the one about how he helped commemorate Andray Blatche’s rookie season by pooping in the man’s shoe?

I mean, really. Shoes are serious business in basketball. And that kind of foolishness doesn’t make you a goofball, it just makes you an ass – a mean ass who makes a hundred million dollars for (excuse me) shit like that.

More seriously, authorities also searched the apartment of Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton yesterday, possibly searching for a weapon that some reports say he brandished at Arenas during their locker room interaction. They can seem to agree that both players were there and guns were there. Who pointed what guns at whom and for what reason has not been determined. Crittenton has not been charged.

The Wizards remain in last place in the Southeast Division.
